Some children of plantation workers in Munnar were born with disabilities.

Due to the nature of their work, parents had no other choice but to leave them locked at home for the whole day without care. These differently-abled children and young adults, unlike their normal counterparts who got both education and care at schools, were devoid of both education and basic day-care.

Trained instructors provide full-fledged training in functional academics and training in self-help skills

We educate

by encouraging them to release their energy while developing their dexterity skills through craft.

Education for differently-abled children.

The Tata Tea Management felt deeply towards the need to offer care for such children. DARE School was initiated as a project to provide education and day care for these specially-abled children. We started with 29 children.

Individualised instructions based on the capability of each child.

Trained instructors provide full-fledged training in functional academics. Our special educators educate & guide the children and young adults with self-help skills and vocational skills. Some of the most popular ones are gardening, cooking, tailoring & embroidery, candle-making, cooking, potpourri making as well as soap-making.

Today, in 2021, we have 57 children. Classes are segregated into Pre-primary, autism, hearing impaired I and II, primary, secondary and pre-vocational.

Our birth rekindled the spark of hope in the hearts of these children and their parents.

The special educators in DARE are RCI certified (Rehabilitation Council of India).

Developing their dexterity skills through craft.

Our special educators incorporate craft skills into their education by teaching them the craft of paper and candle making. They are taught painting on a variety of mediums, some of our girls have particularly taken to Warli designs which they have painted on Tote bags, face masks & wall hangings. Simple stitching & embroidery techniques are taught through pouch making. For those whose hands and minds do not stay still enough for the finer crafts we also teach them  potpourri making, beaded jewellery & soap making as vocational skills.

The artwork and products created by the children of DARE while they are being imparted dexterity skills and Vocational Training are bought by tourists and are sold directly to friends, followers and patrons of the School and the Trust. The proceeds generated from the products we create go back towards the Welfare of all the specially-abled youth at Srishti Trust.
